Custom made outfits for a Toni doll can be expensive and maybe you aren’t much of a seamstress for making your own doll dresses. Here’s something that I bet you never thought of, check out pet clothing.
My sister sent this knit dress for my doll. Since I have the P-90 which is the shortest Toni doll, it seems too big for her. I’m thinking it would fit the P-93 Toni better. It’s probably a dog sweater. Look for cute outfits in the pet section.
Here’s the same sweater dress with the excess fabric pulled to the back and pinned. A belt would help adjust the drape also. You might have to experiment to find pet outfits that properly fit a Toni doll or whatever doll you have.
Here’s why you bother even looking at pet outfits… A dress for a Toni doll either an original from the 1950s or a newly-made one can cost $25 to $50. In some cases, you can actually buy the doll for less than you spend on a single outfit for her.
What To Look For In Pet Outfits
For a Toni doll like my 14-inch one, I check for tiny or miniature dog outfits, sometimes listed as XS size on Amazon. Look for outfits for a Lhasa Apso or a Chihuahua. Often, these can be found for $3.99 and up to $12 which is much cheaper than outfits for dolls. That’s because they are mass produced, not custom made.
Things to keep in mind: Often, the outfit is cut-away underneath to fit the dog’s anatomy. Look at all the pictures to see if this will be a problem. If it is for display or casual play, maybe put that at the back and who will notice?? If it is a hoodie or jacket style outfit, the doll can wear a skirt or slacks with the short part of the jacket in the front and the longer part in the back.
Cute collars for small dogs make nice leather belts for a Toni doll. Measure your doll’s waist and then check the sizes on the pet collars for sale.

Last month, I showed how easy it was to convert a sock into a cowl-neck sweater dress for a Toni doll. That one used a white sock, but I’m revisiting the idea with a colorfully striped sock. Pink and white stripes and a bulky knit gives this one quite a different look.
The instructions are simple. Cut off the toe of the sock. Fold down the top of the sock to form a turtle-neck or cowl-neck. Cut short slits on each side for the arms to go through.
Check out the previous sweater dress and instructions to compare.
I saved the toe of the sock to make a purse or tote bag. To make a handle for the tote, I used a loop earring. An alternate use for the toe of the sock would be to cut it larger so it would make a knit cap for the doll. This would result in a shorter dress.
Since the dress has horizontal stripes, cutting the hem straight was a little more touchy. This larger knit shows an inclination to unravel, so the dress may not hold up more than a few wearings and definitely should not be machine-washed. If you aren’t phobic about sewing, you could turn under the hem and stitch it.
